Careers in Cybersecurity

Empowering students to discover their passions and purpose.

The DiscoverU: Careers in Cybersecurity program is a hands-on program designed to introduce students to the fundamentals of cybersecurity. Over six immersive days, participants will explore ethical hacking, network security, and practical applications of cybersecurity principles. The cybersecurity expert and educator-designed curriculum balances theoretical learning with interactive labs to build both knowledge and confidence.

Curriculum Overview

The DiscoverU: Careers in Cybersecurity program is a comprehensive program designed to immerse students in the dynamic field of cybersecurity. Over the course of six action-packed days, participants will gain foundational knowledge in key cybersecurity principles, explore advanced concepts like ethical hacking, and tackle real-world challenges in a collaborative and engaging environment.

This program introduces students to a multitude of cybersecurity positions and critical areas of cybersecurity,  including network security, vulnerability testing, and practical applications of ethical hacking techniques. Each day builds on the last, combining theory with hands-on labs that empower students to apply what they’ve learned in realistic scenarios. Whether it’s identifying vulnerabilities, analyzing network traffic, or mastering the phases of penetration testing, students will develop critical skills they will carry into future studies or careers.

The curriculum also includes interactive labs and simulations that bring real-life scenarios to life. From leveraging industry-standard tools like Nmap and Metasploit to competing in Capture the Flag challenges, students are constantly engaged in meaningful activities that foster critical thinking and teamwork. The program emphasizes not just technical skills but also the strategic mindset needed to succeed in the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity.

By the end of the program, students will have a well-rounded understanding of cybersecurity fundamentals, confidence in using professional tools, and a deeper appreciation for the importance of protecting digital systems in today’s interconnected world. This experience lays a solid foundation for further exploration in technology and STEM disciplines, all while making learning fun and accessible for teens of all skill levels.

A Deep Dive into
Critical Cybersecurity Elements

Ethical Hacking

Students will understand how to identify and fix vulnerabilities in technology systems.

Web Security

Participants explore the OWASP Top 10 vulnerabilities and how to secure web applications.

Networking Basics

We will focus on how data travels across networks, including protocols and secure communication.

The CIA Triad

We will explore the principles of building security systems: Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability.

AI and Cybersecurity Tools

AI is at the forefront of future technology, making it vital to use AI to solve cybersecurity challenges.

Cybersecurity Careers

Students will explore different career paths to gain an understanding of various roles in cybersecurity.

Immersive Simulations and Labs that Keep Students Excited and Engaged!

Capture the Flag (CTF)

Compete in a team-based challenge to solve security puzzles, crack passwords, and find hidden “flags.” This engaging activity ties together the various skills learned and allows students to apply their newfound knowledge.

Simulated Web Attacks

Students exploit a vulnerable web server that hosts files to learn about common security flaws like passwords left in documents, insecure ssh keys, and services that use password re-use in a controlled environment.

Network Scanning and Vulnerability Testing

Participants use tools like Nmap and Wireshark to identify open ports and analyze network traffic, simulating real-world scenarios faced by cybersecurity professionals.

A Curriculum Steeped in Learning and Fun!

The curriculum combines learning with excitement, offering students the chance to solve real-world challenges in a team setting. It fosters creativity, collaboration, and technical proficiency, preparing participants for future STEM opportunities and boosting their confidence in tackling complex problems.

Who Should Join and Program Prerequisites

This program is ideal for students in grades 9-12 who are curious about technology, enjoy problem-solving, or want to explore cybersecurity as a career path. No prior knowledge is required, as the program is beginner-friendly, but a desire to learn and implement the knowledge is crucial. This program will not only instruct, but will demonstrate how to problem solve using AI, the internet, and critical thinking skills.
